Chareth Cutestory - Between the Breeze

Between the Breeze album cover

Sometimes 3 tracks is all you need. Soft, sweet, catchy, playful, tongue-tied, Chareth Cutestory’s gone too soon Between the Breeze is a continuation of the early 00s folktronica revival that’s swept through underground indie over the last few years. It’s interesting that when this stuff first came around it was the product of more traditionally-minded musicians setting aside their skepticism to experiment with new tools, but now it’s largely those borne in the digital age returning to humble hand-tuned instruments as a means of breaking free from the machines we’ve encased ourselves in. Either way, you can find some pretty great songs at the intersection.

James K - Friend

Friend album cover

Feels like this could end up being album of the year among the “streams music on nina, reads all the Perfectly Imperfect interviews, and never misses a West Mineral club night” crowd. No shade as I count myself as certainly circling the periphery of that scene. James K gathers the threads of the genres that animate this trendsetting set (trip-hop, downtempo, 4th world ambient, dream pop) and ties them together into a blissed out journey through the slipperiness of selfhood. Find solace at the center of the speaker and become your own best friend in the process.

dolo2k - Let's Meet At Junes

Let's Meet At Junes album cover

dolo’s crowning achievement to date, an invigorating, candy-colored jaunt through his lovelorn psyche, listen as he spurns his shorty to chase the hoes one minute and laments seeing her less the very next. It’s an emotionally confused, whiplash inducing journey, but hey, so is love right? The beats ride like vintage spaceships, all chrome bodies with glinting neon control panels capable of starting, stopping, and reversing at the push of a button. At the apex of it all is “rivals,” a 2-minute ethereal ascent featuring Squadda B from Main Attrakionz and cementing dolo’s status as spiritual successor to their zooted cloud rap sound.

SOTW: Anysia Kym, Tony Seltzer - "Long4"

Purity album cover

This is one of the toughest track I’ve ever heard all year. Tony Seltzer’s massive, bit crushing kicks and aggressively mechanized snares wreak havoc on what would otherwise be a euphoric 2 minutes spent among the celestial orbs. Instead this thing hits like a punch to the gut, leaving you short of breath in the same way Kym sings of feeling short on time. The weight of our present moment is coming down upon us and it remains to be seen whether that pressure will beget diamonds or just another layer of sediment to be kicked underfoot.
